National Park Week 4/16-4/24
It is National Parks week, which means everyone gets in free!
Yellowstone was the first National Park in 1916.
Of the ones I have visited, the most memorable to me are Mt. Rushmore in SD, and The Arizona Memorial in HI.
Nature is more my thing. I love getting out in the trees, mountains and water. My absolute favorite place on the planet is Yosemite. I probably drive my husband bonkers because all I ever want to do is go to there.
I did manage to get him to go up in February this year to try and see the firefall at Horsetail Falls. I was disappointed that I didn’t get a blood red photo like a lot of people. It all has to do with timing, angles, and sun reflecting on the water and rocks.
From the ages of 8-10 my dad was stationed at Pearl Harbor. Our babysitter was a boy scout troop den mother. We got to go on a field trip with the troop to the USS Arizona. Although I was young, I remember feeling very somber there.
Also while my dad was stationed there, we went on vacation to the big island. We actually got to walk across a volcano which was pretty neat! At the end you were given a certificate. I think mine is in my mom’s hope chest.
When we lived in Carlsbad, NM they taught the kids a song called Bats eat bugs they don’t eat people. I think they were trying to make the children feel safer with all the bats that came out each night.
Some of the NPS Areas that I have been to over the years are:
Alcatraz Island in CA (the ferry is not considered part of the park and is not free for national parks week)
Death Valley National Park in CA
Golden Gate National Recreation Area in CA
Joshua Tree National Park in CA
Mojave National Preserve in CA
Yosemite National Park in CA
Washington Monument in DC
White House and Presidents Park in DC
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in HI
World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument (USS ARIZONA) in HI
Ozark National Scenic Riverways in MO
Carlsbad Caverns in NM
Lake Mead National Recreation Area in NV
Lewis and Clark National Historical Park in OR
Badlands in SD
Missouri National Recreational River in SD
Mount Rushmore in SD
Shiloh National Military Park in TN
Whitman Mission National Historical Site in WA
Zion National Park in UT
Do you have plans to go to a park in the coming week? Which one? I am hoping for Yosemite but Lassen Volcanic National Park is also on my radar.
