Ugly Christmas Sweater Cookies
Christmas is a time of many traditions both old and new. I remember as a child making sugar cookies. My mom always had a big tuperware bucket full of aluminum and copper cookie cutters. I also have memories of a cookie press gun.
For myself, the fun part was playing with the dough, rolling it out, pressing the cookie cutter down, trying to take the cookie dough out in one piece, and smooshing the remainder into another dough ball.
Personally, I have never gotten the idea of the ugly Christmas Sweater. If I want to wear something, do I want to feel ugly in it? Do I want other people to think I look hideous? I realize people actually host ugly Christmas sweater parties.
I recently saw a box claiming to be an Ugly Sweater Sugar Cookie Kit. I thought, awww, why not? What’s the worst that could happen?
I actually had a good amount of fun! The kit comes with ingredients to making red and green frosting and pipping bags. I did not have a lot of confidence in my ability to use a pipping bag, so…. I cheated. I picked up a tube of Wilton’s White Sparkling Frosting and a box of Betty Crocker miniature frosting tubes in red, green, yellow, and blue.
I am wishing I had taken photos of my cookies before I added the sprinkles. My first cookie was red and green vertical stripes. Next I made a candy cane striped cookie. I added candy cane sprinkles from the Ugly Sweater Sugar Cookie Kit.
Next I attempted a Christmas tree on a sweater. It started looking pretty okay. I didn’t care for how the sprinkles. I had to remind myself that making these cookies was A) about having fun, and B) they were supposed to be Ugly Sweaters.
I wanted to be inclusive so I did my best on a Kawanza sweater.
If we had Kawanza, we HAD to have Chanukah as well!
The last sweater was my biggest, I wish I hadn’t used sprinkles, moment. It had green sleeves. I had done a red stripe, a white middle, and a red stripe. I thought it was festive but in the end, it was a mess.
*note to self* Stop being so hard on yourself. This is about having fun!
The last part of the process was the absolute best! I got to eat a warm sugar cookie! They taste great.
