Rainy Day Games
It has been raining cats and dogs for over 24 hours. The weatherman is calling for at least another 24 hours.
So what do we do with the kids when it is raining? How do we have fun? Most importantly, how do we find JOY in the rain?
I have unfortunately have gone from loving playing in the rain to feeling like a drenched cat in the rain. Finding JOY in the rain is a goal I actually recently set.
People often say if you are out in the rain you will get sick. Bacteria and viruses make you sick. It is funny how it is okay to play in a sprinkler or a pool but not the rain.
Being outdoors in the rain can be fun. You just have to have the right gear and the right attitude.
For Gear you need:
- Rain Boot s or Galoshes
- Rain Jacket with Hood
Now that you are ready, what should you do?
- Sing in the rain
- Dance in the rain
- Catch rain drops on your tongue
- Make mud pies
- Play with Tonka Trucks in the mud
- Stomp in puddles
- See where the water is flowing
- Put a toy boat in the flowing water
As a child, rainy days at school were the best! For recess we got to play games inside.
Some of my all time favorite indoor rainy day games are:
- Heads Up 7 Up
- I Spy
- Red Light Green Light
- Simon Says
- Mother May I
- 20 Questions
- Button Button Whose got the Button
- Hokey Pokey
But today is Sunday. There is no school on Sunday. What can we do with fewer people?
- Blanket Fort
- Hot Cocoa
- Play Card Games
- Play Board Games
- Arts and Crafts
- Go to an indoor play space i.e. at the mall, various fast food restaurants, child focused restaurants, etc.
