the 7 magic reasons children love little golden books

The 7 magic reasons children love Little Golden Books

Today is National Mother Goose Day! Mother Goose was one of the first 12 Little Golden Books released in 1942.  I want to share the 7 magical reasons children love Little Golden Books.

1 This Little Golden Book belongs to

On the inside cover of every book is that special page. The page that made us want to learn how to write our own name. The page that made the book our own! Once our name was in it, it was ours! It is no secret that little ones want to have something that is just for them.

2 Seeing the trademarked golden spine tells children that it is something they can read.

Moms and dad flip through magazines during trips to the store and while standing in line. Children are left just watching the adults. The National Enquirer doesn’t mean a lot to a 4 year old.

When mom or dad is pushing the cart at the store and a child sees the golden spine, they are compelled to reach out and grab it. While the grown ups are busy shopping the child can be easily self-entertained.

3 Little Golden Books give a self esteem boost.

Books like The Little Red Caboose teach us at a young age that if finishing last is okay as long as you finish. Sometimes we need a little help to make it over the mountain.

4 Little Golden Books often teach something.

Doctor Dan is beautiful. It shows children playing and one getting injured. Once his mom fixes his boo boo for him, he returns to his friends. When another friend gets injured, Dan repeats his mother’s steps to help his friend.

Little Golden Books

5 Little Golden Books like Mother Goose feature memorable stories and nursery rhymes.

As a young child, there is a constant need to be a BIG KID. One of the signs of becoming a big kid is learning to read. Little Golden Books featuring Mother Goose’s Nursery Rhymes are simple enough for a young child to memorize after hearing it once or twice. The child can then “READ” the story and turn the pages.  While they haven’t learned to read yet, they experience the feelings of success.

Little Golden Books

6 Little Golden Books help children deal with fears in a safe and playful way.

I think one of my all time favorite books as a young child was the Monster at the end of this Book staring LOVABLE, FURRY OLD GROVER!

I remember my dad reading it to me. My dad trying to save me by holding the pages closed and me laughing while trying to fight to turn the next page.

In the end Grover found out there was nothing to be afraid of. How often is that true for us, even as adults?

7 And finally, because Little Golden Books knows children, embraces them, and meets them at their level.

If you recall in my Hello Kitty Food Truck post, there was a lot of disappointment to go around.

I recently went to a Little Golden Books Bus Tour stop at Books Inc in Santa Clara, CA. I didn’t invite my grand daughter because I was afraid of a repeat of the Hello Kitty experience. I really wish I had taken her.

The Tour Bus was interactive. There were puzzles, things to look at with a magnifying glass, magnets to remove and reveal the cover of Dr Dan, a tv, and so much more.

Not only was it interactive, they had a Poky Little Puppy there to take photos with. There was a story time with the Books Inc employees. As if that was not enough, they set up an activity area where the children made their own Little Golden Books and enjoyed snacks.

Because we love winning prizes when we are 7, I purchased up 6 Little Golden Books to giveaway while I was at Books Inc. The titles include Scruffy the Tugboat, Doctor Dan the Bandage Man,  The Little Red Caboose, The Poky Little Puppy, The Monster at the End of this Book and Another Monster at the End of this Book.

Build a Bear Workshop

Build A Bear Workshop

A few weeks back I mentioned there would be a Build A Bear Workshop post coming up soon. I had taken my grand daughter to the Hello Kitty Food Truck in Fresno. The lines ended up being over 5 hours long. After about an hour and a half, we decided to go inside the mall to get a prize.

Once she selected the two animals she wanted to make, it was time to select sounds to put inside. Next, she took her babies to the worker at the stuffing machine. The worker helped stuff the bears while she did the power pedal.

She named her Wild Style Leopard Pink. Pink has a roar sound effect and a Sugar Cookie Scent.

The second one she made was a Color Craze Lion named Rainbow Sparkles. Rainbow Sparkles sings the My Little Pony theme song and smells like Cotton Candy.

Before the staff sews the doll up, they have the child do a song and dance. They choose a heart, make a wish, and seal it with a kiss. The heart is then put in the doll.

The next step involved her giving her dolls a bath. Again pushing a foot pedal, the child brushes the doll while air blows on it.  Finally, the child scans the bears tag and creates a birth certificate. Now that my granddaughter is in Kindergarden and learning all her letters, she wanted to do the typing herself.

Earlier today, I was moping around. I have been battling a sore throat for about a week now. I also woke up with the blues today. Bart was wanting to know what he could do to cheer me up and I told him I wanted to go to Build A Bear Workshop.

He agreed to play along. We visited the Modesto location.

One of the book ideas I have played with for years involves a Panda. I was so excited to see a fluffy Panda. Bart also thought it was perfect for me. I named her Manda Panda. Because I had the blues, I put a trolls song, Get Back Up Again,  in it to cheer me up. I selected  the Sugar Cookie Scent.

Bart even asked if he could make one too! He choose a black bear with a Star Trek 50th Anniversary logo. He didn’t want any sounds, but he did agree to scent it. He loves strawberry. So Jean-Luc is Strawberry scented.

Did you know your bears are microchipped? just like your pets? The worker removes a piece off the tag and places it inside the bear for safe keeping.  If you join the find a bear program (it is optional and free) and someone  brings your bear in, the staff opens up the bear. They remove the piece from the bear. Scan the tag to find out where it belongs. They reseal the bear and then ship it back to its rightful owner.

I think that is beyond cool. How many times has your child lost that precious toy and been heartbroken?

The bear leaves the workshop in a cute box. The box looks like the box a cat comes home in when adopted from a shelter.

Build a Bear Workshop

Because I am an Oakland A’s fan, I decided Manda Panda needed to be ready for baseball season.

Build a Bear Workshop

Bart didn’t want clothes for his bear. I Thought I saw what color uniform he was looking at. I was thinking I was going to have to come back to pick it up, but then Bart asked if he could run to Bath and Body Works before the mall closed. YOU SURE CAN !!!

Build a Bear Workshop

Ummm yeah, so as I am writing this, Bart informs me that Jean-Luc wears red and I was demoting him. He would not let me put the Build a Bear Workshop     yellow outfit on his bear! LOL!!!!! He also argued if Jean-Luc ever used a Phaser. Google has photos showing it, but he states Jean-Luc would never resort to violence. Shesh… you would think he was 7.

Build a Bear Workshop

Now, that I am feeling a little better I am thinking I would like to share the joy. I am giving away $30 of Build A Bear Workshop Gift Cards. Scroll down to enter.

It’s my party and I’ll give if I want to…..

It’s my party and I’ll give if I want to…..

My 45th birthday is on Tuesday, shhhh I’m still trying to become 7! My work schedule this coming week is pretty busy, so if I was doing anything for my birthday it was going to have to be today.

Last night, I decided what I wanted for my birthday. I wanted books. Kids books. Not for me, but for the 7’s out there.  Lately, on my drive to work I have been passing a Little Free Library that was nearly empty. It was outside of a school and I felt strongly something needed to be done about it.

The Little Free Library is a simple concept. 1) Take a book. 2) Leave a book. It is an honor system within the community. It is actually a global movement and they are everywhere, you just have to know what to look for.

I did a little googlefu and found out there are over 21 free libraries in Modesto, CA. I made a list of all the addresses. Next I went to mapquest and used their trip planner. You can enter up to 26 stops and it will give you the best route to take.

My husband and I then drove around scouting the locations to get an idea of how many books we NEEDED. We also discussed where we were going to find all these books.

party

I woke up nice and early this morning without an alarm clock. I went to our first pick. OMG, This was so meant to be. All books were on sale for 10 for $1 …. are you kidding me? I took a shopping cart and filled it with kids books.

By purchasing the books from the Community Hospice Hope Chest Thrift Store, I was giving twice. Once by making a purchase that benefits our local hospice services. The second obviously by distributing the books around town.

party

This is what about 300 books look like.

party

We did one minor detour from the route Mapquest suggested. We knew of two locations that had zero to almost zero books. We decided they were a priority and went to them first.

party

First up was 2908 Coffee Road

party

Bebita had heard rumors that there are websites dedicated to dogs on roofs. At first she thought our stop at 1911 Toyton was just for that. She quickly found out that I had a different idea.

party

I think this looks much better.

After the first two stops, we reverted to the Mapquest suggested route.

party

808 Aspirations Court was where Bebita finally began to understand the concept of the Little Free Libraries.

party

Next up was 3421 Gagosian Ct

party

1980 Fisher Road was tricky. When we went out last night using the gps, we ended up going down a dirt road leading to someones driveway. We almost didn’t go back, but being as it was my birthday present and all, Bart humored me.

party

1980 Fisher Road was the largest one we saw. It was immaculate and most of the books appeared to be new.  So, how did we miss it the night before? It isn’t down Fisher Road. It is on the cross street of Shoemake in front of an orchard.  If you turn down Fisher Road, you are just not going to find it.

1135 N Rosemore Ave

We were unable to locate anything resembling a little free library.

party

1580 Normandy Dr

party party

315 Hackberry made me smile

party

520 Olive Ave made me smile. When I think of the Little Free Libraries, I think of children. A lot of the Little Free Libaries are perched too high for young children to access the books with ease. I like the multi level concept because the 5-7 crowd can pick a book on their own.

party

720 Griswold Ave was simply fun. The property is decorated in a magical way.

party

128 E Roseburg Ave also had a very creative and cute case.

party

1408 Stetson Ave is actually maintained by a local Girl Scouts Troop.

party

If only they had a cookie booth set up outside…..hmmmm me need Girl Scout Cookies

party

Less then a block away at 1432 Stetson Ave was a second Little Free Library

party

1338 Cypress Ave has one as well. There used to be the word BOOKS on the top of the library but I don’t remember seeing it there today.

party

1320 Celeste Dr is inside doctors office. Because it was a Sunday, we missed them.

party

2504 Boston Way had a fun feel to it.

party

1308 Turquoise looked like a bird house and was decorated for St Patrick’s Day.

party

3105 Fredricksburg way was simply adorable!

party

4316 E Orangeburg also had a bench. I really like the idea of a bench for people to stop and look at a book at.

2905 Penny Lane Apt A was in a closed, gated community. We could not visually see the Little Free Library from the fences.

   party

Our last stop was at 400 Capistrano Dr. It is a school. Unfortunately it is completely fenced in and gated. The gates had locks. We were unable to access the Library.

The following Libraries are ones we missed in our initial research.

party

I am not sure how we missed 2421 Leonatus Ave in our research but it looks pretty.

party

We also missed the Robertson Road Parent Resource Center Little Free Library which was a young man’s Eagle Scout project.

party

We didn’t find an address for the Little Free Library on Goldfield Dr.

party

Our research also missed 818 Encina

I hope you all enjoyed my party! If you know of any other locations, be sure to drop a note in the comments.

Lego Batman Movie

LEGO BATMAN MOVIE and Giveaway

My grand daughter is a huge Batman fan and enjoys playing with Lego’s. On a recent rainy Sunday, I took her see the Lego Batman Movie. We first went to the Regal Cinema in Modesto. Unfortunately, all shows within 2 hours were sold out. I decided to check Galaxy Theater in Riverbank for show times. I am glad I bought tickets on  my phone because there were only 2 seats left for the show starting an hour from then.

Lego BatmanLego Batman

To say Nevaeh is a Batman fan is an understatement. She was so excited that she wore her Bat Girl dress and cape. She even wore a matching purple headband.

Lego Batman

We picked up Popcorn, Junior Mints, a chocolate F’Real Shake, and a Mr. Pibb. While I have featured the F’Real shake in the past, she had never experienced it.

She picked chocolate. We walked over to the machine. I took off the cover and we read the directions.  Because it was out of her reach, I placed her cup in the cup holder. I then asked if she wanted Thin, Normal, or Thick. She said Thick. I showed her which button to push. She laughed and giggled. She asked questions about what it was doing. When it was done, she was impressed with her shake.

She gave it 2 thumbs up.

I normally do not post pictures of our treats but on the screen there was a blurb saying to post to twitter with #myusual and you could win free movie tickets. We made a little display with both of our treats. Because we were going to see Lego Batman Movie, we had her pose in the photo wearing her Bat Girl dress.

Lego BatmanLego Batman

7’s love Lego’s. 7’s love Batman. Parents, Grandparents and Great Grandparents grew up watching Batman. It was a win-win. The characters were well known to all. They story line of Batman having to save Gotham City is one we all know well.

Lego Batman

I laughed as the movie started when Batman was reading words to a Michael Jackson song. It was attributed to Michael Jackson, but then erased and attributed to Batman.

In the movie, we learn that Bruce Wayne adopted the boy who becomes Robin. We also learn how Bat Girl came to be.

Lego BatmanLego Batman Lego Batman

7’s in the audience will be laughing at all the poop and fart jokes. The adults will be feeling more nostalgic.

The movie had great pop culture references: Dalek from Dr Who, Godzilla, Jaws, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Medusa, Gremlins, Voldemort, and so many more.

It also featured movies and music from multiple generations: Jerry McGuire, Wham, Michael Jackson, and Cutting Crew.

Lego Batman Lego Batman Lego Batman

The Lego Batman Movie is a great example of teamwork. It even shows how working with people we don’t like can be beneficial. They also demonstrate that families can be made from scratch.

It made for a great rainy day activity. We played in the FREE Selfie with Me booth, took silly photos with the character spinners, ate delicious snacks, and saw a movie we both enjoyed.

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday !!!!

Life is amazing. When you are young you don’t realize what a miracle your birth is or was.

happy birthday

My granddaughter was born on January 11,  2011. My husband and I lived in Reno, NV at the time. We received a call that it was time to make a road trip as our grand baby was on the way. We had just got to town and pulled into Chicken Barn, when we got a call that they were doing a c-section. We hopped back in the car and headed to the hospital.

A lot of times we take things like pregnancy and child birth for granted. My daughter rarely saw a dr while she was pregnant. She ended up going past her due date. It wasn’t until she fell in the shower and went to the ER that someone said, we need to get the baby out.

So often we feel like if a baby makes it to term, then life is great and problem free. While there are issues with being premature, there are also issues with being over due. In my granddaughter’s case it meant she had already passed her merconium in the womb.

Her first four months of life were a rocky period. She was almost a year before I saw her again.

Around 4 months, an incredible lady stepped in and gave my granddaughter the family she deserved. I didn’t know where the baby was for close to 6 months and it was the most painful thing I can imagine. I can’t tell you how relieved I was to know she was not only okay but happy, healthy, and loved.

happy birthday

Turning 1 was all about YO GABA GABA. I got to know my grand daughter and her new family.  I can not even begin to put into words the depths of my gratitude to Her.

About two weeks before her second birthday she was officially adopted.  happy birthday

As she grew, her sense of humor was amazing. I am telling you this is one of the funniest little girls you will ever meet.

happy birthday

Who could resist those puppy dog eyes? By the time she was 4 she had it down pat.

Happy Birthday

At  5 her independence was blossoming. She began trying new things and being independent.

happy birthday

Today, she turned 6. She is smart as a whip. She loves school. She can write her name, count to 100, and even say some words in Spanish.

Happy Birthday

Six years ago, I could not have imagined life as it is today. My daughter and I are estranged. My husband and I are living in Modesto. My granddaughter’s mommy is a dear friend to us. I see my amazing granddaughter almost every week.

Each of us have been blessed to be given the amazing gift of life.  I can only hope for more blessings over the next 6 years.

To Help 7’s celebrate my granddaughter’s 6th birthday, we are giving away a $25 APPLEBEES Gift Card in time for Valentines Day!
