Greatest International Scavenger Hunt The World Has Ever Seen

Greatest International Scavenger  Hunt The World Has Ever Seen

Over the past week you may have seen me post strange things like needing help with carpool karaoke, letters from elected officials, and picking blackberries in Bellingham, WA.  You probably thought I was going insane when I was asking when you brush your teeth, what side you start on.

I am here to tell you there is a method to the madness. I did not go insane. In an effort to rediscover the joys of childhood, I participated in GISHWHES or the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen.

What:

GISHWHES is the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen. It began as a publicity stunt for Supernatural. It is now a charity event.

Who:

gishwhes

The face of GISHWHES is Misha Collins of Supernatural. GISHWHES partners with the Random Acts Foundation. In 2016 there were over 55,000 participants. I am not sure how many participants we had in 2017.

When:

GISHWHES takes place during 7 days. Over the years GISHWHES has taken place between July and November. The exact dates vary.

Just like the title says, it is International.

How:

Participants either pay an entry fee ranging from $20-$250. At different levels, participants receive different incentives.  Some participants even pay it forward and pay for scholarships for those who can’t afford to sign up. This year we raised enough to save 40,000 acres of the rain forest!

Teams consist of 15 players. You can create your own team or have GISHWHES staff place you on a team.  I requested to be on Orsic Chau’s team called Agressively Casual Gishers

Our team used google docs to track tasks and plan. We used slack to communicate with each other.

It seems logical that you would want to be on a team with friends but honestly being on a random team really pays off.  A handful of the tasks require you to be in certain locations around the world. This year they included Bellingham, WA, Australia, Germany, Japan, etc. Our team had members from the USA, Germany, Australia,  the UK, Denmark, and Canada. If it were a group of friends, we might not have had the ability to complete some of the tasks we did!

The list is revealed on day one and grows through day 7. This year it started at 198 and ended at 209 items. A few items were removed over the course of the contest either due to safety or at the request of those impacted by the item.

When the week is over, we are given the opportunity to judge categories for the Coffee Table book and Hall of Fame.

The winning team gets a trip. This year is a prepaid trip to Hawaii with Misha!

Making our communities a better place

gishwhes

We moved a 8 foot stuffed bear from Redding, CA to Washington, DC 5 miles at a time.

We had a virtual escape room. Aggressively Casual Gishers managed to escape! We worked on it as a team and put together all the different things each other figured out and as a group we escaped.

We raised money for charities in honor of Giles Duley who is a photographer who is working to raise awareness of the plight of refugees.

We helped grant a dying wish.  Fiona Sargeant was a professional ballerina. She now runs a ballet school for disadvantaged children in South Africa. Not only does she teach ballet, she feeds them, helps with homework, and transports the children. Fiona has terminal cancer. When she passes it is expected her dance school will close as there will be no funding. GISHer’s raised $259,981 to keep her legacy alive.

We made political statements

We tried to find animals homes

I wish I had videos and photos of all of our submissions, but they get taken down  at the end of the hunt.
