State Fair

California State Fair

Yesterday, Bart and I went to the ir California State Fair  at CalExpo in Sacramento, CA.

The place is huge! Parking was $10 and we still parked too far away to walk. It was nice that they had school buses running as a shuttle from the parking lots to the gates.

So our first ride was a bus ride.

I want to say the theme of the day was goodwill.  The man in the photo below, was in front of us for the ATM before entering. The lady before him left her ATM card in the machine. He made an effort to give it back to her.

Later in the day, I noticed a Hispanic male couple walking holding hands. No one was bothering them and they looked happy. One of the things that stood out to me was there was no yelling, screaming, fighting, etc. all day.

Outside the front gate was a giant CALIFORNIA. Bart was thinking it looked like the one at California Adventure. Here I am sitting on the L.

We started by riding the sky ride across the park to peek at what was below. The sky ride is basically a ski lift that cuts across the park.

Apparently when creditors took Neverland Ranch they had an auction. Some of the rides ended up at the state fair. There were several and they were clearly marked. If you were ever curious as to what they looked like you can see them and even ride them.

I liked that the little kids had their own midway. I think it is probably a lot safer that way.

The art work was amazing. Bart commented on how much better it was then at county fairs.

There were also exhibits featuring each county in the state. My favorite was Calaveras County.

As expected, there was a lot of agriculture information.

There was a building dedicated to the history of travel in the state of California. Above are a few of my favorites.

The September 11th Memorial was nice. There were photos, a replica of the twin towers, a globe with the names of all those who died, a separate monument for the victims at the pentagon.

I was amazed by the sand sculpture by the Cal Expo fountain.

Not far from there was Raging Waters Water Park. I am not sure how that worked. I don’t know if it costs an additional fee to get in and I am not sure if you could go to the water park and skip the fair.

If you were daring enough, the California Lottery had a Price is Right wheel and a big spin wheel. It would just set you back $50 in scratchers to get a chance. ummm no thanks.state fair

What is the fair without food? We actually only shared a single teriyaki chicken rice bowl. ($10 bucks) Most of our money was spent on beverages as it was hot out.

We did discover how they cook those gigantic turkey legs you see.

I thought I was going to lose my mind the first time I saw someone walking around with a half a watermelon. I LOVE WATERMELON!

The fair is not the fair without carnival games that no one can win with gigantic prizes to make little kids beg their parents to let them try one more time.

I have always liked the midway rides after dark. I love the lights. I love the entertainment.  The state fair has many stages. The biggest is the Toyota stage. Some of the featured acts have been STYX, LOVERBOY, Dwight Yokam, the POINTER SISTERS, Tony, Toni, Tone, Plain White T’s, Lincoln Brewster, and more.

On Friday and Saturday Nights, Dish, is sponsoring fireworks.

As you can see we avoided the livestock. Bart is highly allergic to many types of animals. After 2 weeks of battling the hives, I didn’t want to see if I could retrigger them.

Bart really liked that CalExpo is almost completely paved. He commented on how nice it was to not be walking in dirt. They also have really nice restrooms.

After the fireworks, when we were heading out to the shuttle bus stop, we had a small incident that was resolved beautifully. I was busy catching Pokemon and an older man approached Bart. The man told a story of getting off the bus, falling hitting his head, and asked if he had money. I wasn’t paying much attention until 2 undercover officers approached from behind the guy. They held their badges out low and made a hand signal.

At this point, Bart backed away. My attention was grabbed. I thought they were man handling some old man who seemed confused. It wasn’t until later that I understood what was going on.  They told the man to take his hands out of his pockets and he didn’t comply. They then pulled his hands out. They also pulled a wad of cash out of one of his pockets. At this point, I was wondering if I should be filming this. Again, I was not fully aware of what was going on. I was simply a bystander who was confused by what she was seeing.

At this point, the two officers took him somewhere.

We went to get in line for the shuttle. Bart explained what happened. Apparently the lil old man was panhandling and the police were having none of it. I am guessing they saw him approach others before he tried Bart. The sweet confused lil ol man who needed a buck for the bus had a wad of cash from others he conned. Boy did I feel dumb.  In hindsight, I wouldn’t say they man handled him. I would say they were not willing to tolerate him taking advantage of people leaving the fair. I would also say that it was handled so smoothly and discretely that no one knew it was happening. No yelling, No aggression, just firmness.

While we waited for the bus, I played Pokemon more. I guess on the 18th there is going to be a Pokemon event. If you recall my prior Pokemon post, I couldn’t get the game to work. In less then one hour at the fair I leveled up from level 1 to level 5. There are a ton of Pokestops and gyms, etc.  I only played for about an hour because I was busy enjoying the fair and I didn’t want to waste data.

As you can probably guess, We had a really nice time.

GO TO THE STATE FAIR!!!
