Pea Soup Andersen’s

Nestled between the Central Valley and the California coast is a town called Santa Nella. If there is one thing Santa Nella is famous for, it is PEA SOUP ANDERSEN’S.

Pea Soup Andersen's Windmil

It had probably been a good 7 years since Bart and I visited. We could still remember how good the Split Pea Soup was. So, we decided it was time to go back.

When you first arrive, you are greeted by a Danish village, complete with windmill. Inside there is a hotel, restaurant, bar, and gift shop. It is a nice little tourist stop along I-5.

The place mats have a distance chart to various cities across the state. You also get a cute napkin featuring their two characters, Hap-Pea and Pea-Wee.

One of our disappointments this trip was a lack of service from our waiter. On prior visits, we received a lazy Susan with Ham, Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, Scallions, and Croutons to add as we desired. We did not receive them this time.

While the soup was still okay, it was not the same. We are not sure if it was something we paid extra for last time or not. The waiter didn’t suggest any additional items, so we just expected it.

This visit it was just a thin pea soup. Nothing special. Nothing to write home about.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say the Baked Onion Cheese Roll was probably what we both enjoyed most.

 Pea Soup Andersen's Lite Breakfast

Hubby enjoyed breakfast for dinner. The eggs and hasbrowns were cooked perfectly. And the ham, well the ham was just wonderful.

Pea Soup Andersen's Danish Style Meatloaf

I ordered the Danish Style Meatloaf. I was not really impressed. Many years ago I worked in the dietary department at a hospital. I would classify the meal as a dysphagia 1 or 2 diet. That means it was almost a puree.

The mashed potatoes were so thin that they slipped through the prongs of my fork. I can’t say I have ever had mashed potatoes do that before.

While I was able to eat the mashed potatoes, I could not bring myself to eat the meatloaf. At first we joked that it looked like mystery meat from when we were in school. While it was tasty, I could not get past the texture and consistency, I would describe it best as puree or pressed or I don’t know.

I was just done.

Pea Soup Andersen's Bombs Away Brownie

We decided to order the Bombs Away Brownie because I was obviously still hungry and hubby loves brownies.

The menu mentioned the brownie, ice cream, whip cream, rainbow sprinkles, and chocolate drizzle. No where did it mention a topping of almonds.

Again, had we know that we would not have ordered it, or we would have asked to have them left off as hubby is very allergic to nuts.

When it was brought out to us, the waiter asked if we wanted extra plates for it. My response was, “he’s allergic to nuts, so he won’t be having any.” The waiter gave me a disgusted look and walked away.

I mentioned earlier that the service was just off. We were never asked how our food was. We were never offered refills on our drinks. While we neatly stacked our used dishes at the edge of the table, the waiter felt no need to remove them.

While the decor is fun and the food was tasty, the service just ruined the experience for us this time.
