Raspberry Pi3 is the simple way to learn to code

I received my first Raspberry Pi3 during a recent Reddit Gifts Maker Faire gift exchange. I knew about them and I understood the basic concept. It was almost comical that it arrived days after I was telling Bart about Raspberry Pi. He had never heard of it and we were going to the Bay Area Maker Faire.

You might be asking, “What is a Raspberry Pi?”

Let’s take a look at how I put mine together.

Raspberry Pi is actually a complete computer the size of a credit card! You would have to see it to believe it!

The above photo was the contents of the box.

The Pi 3 Model B uses a 1.2GHz 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU, has 1GB RAM, integrated 802.11n wireless LAN, and Bluetooth 4.1. It even has 4 USB ports so you can attach a mouse, keyboard and anything else you might desire.

The book that comes with it gives you simple instructions so you can attach the heat sinks, connect to a power supply and a monitor. It then instructs you how to connect USB devices and finally how to connect to a network.

The Raspberry Pi comes with NOOBS. The SD card is used to download the Raspbian operating system. Raspbian is based off of Debain Linux. The recommended programming language is Phython.

My Santa blessed me with a bundle that had a case to protect my mini computer.

Once you are done building your computer, you initaly use the NOOBS software. NOOBS will walk you through downloading and installing Raspbian.

When it comes to kids and learning to code, The Raspberry Pi Foundation has a solution.

“Code Clubs are volunteer-led extra-curricular coding clubs for children age 9 to 13. Children that attend learn to code games, animations, and websites using the projects we provide. Working with volunteers and with other children in their club, they grow their digital skillset.”

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has several projects on their website to assist in teaching and inspiring people. You can see one of them here.

Kids might try something like this:

Honestly, I was thinking of trying something robotic or animated. Bart wants to create something with music on it.

Santa had other plans. A day after I received my Pi I got another box on my door step.

What could be inside?

Are you kidding me? I can turn my Raspberry Pi into a Nintendo?

I hear Mario calling…. Your princess is in another castle. Sorry guys, I need to go jump some pipes and swim through fish to find my princess.

Okay, so Raspberry Pi is awesome. I am in love with it. I am having a lot of fun!
